Message from the President The
Trust released an eNews earlier this week. This is a short follow up on
two matters. I have an update on the graffiti issue. The Trust has been
in touch with the police and can provide relevant phone numbers which
are listed below. This applies to all of Beecroft and Cheltenham,
regardless of the council area in which you reside.
On Wednesday night this week Hornsby Council passed a Mayoral minute
relating to the funds on hold from the sale of the former church at
Cheltenham. I won’t go into details as they have a long and complicated
history. Those of you who do know the contentious history relating to
the use of the funds may be pleased to note that the use of the church
funds have been deferred from Council’s quarterly budget. Part of the
funds were to be used to repair the large Beecroft war memorial. While
the war memorial is in need of repairs to the sandstone facade, there
are a number of other issues that are waiting resolution and therefore
have a higher priority.
For example, Hornsby Council is waiting to receive reimbursement from
the NSW Government for the Berowra storms last December. The Trust, with
Council’s assistance, applied for a State community grant for the
Beecroft war memorial repairs. It makes sense that Council should wait
and see if the grant is successful before the church funds are
used. Finally, Council is in the process of carrying out
environmental studies on Byles Creek to ascertain whether additional
open space land is required to preserve the future of the biodiversity
in the area. This study is expected to be completed early next year. CLICK HERE for the Council business papers
With respect to the regeneration of the bushland along the former
haulage road near Cheltenham Oval, I understand the Metro team has
requested a formal letter, and not just an email, before they will
discuss the matter with Hornsby Council. Council hope to send this
letter soon. They have had to put all their resources into the recent
bushfire crisis.
Some of our readers picked up on the incorrect date for the Ahimsa event this coming Sunday. The date is of course the 17th November.
I also had a chat to one of the ladies living in the women’s shelter at
Jamieson House. She was genuinely happy with the accommodation and
really appreciated the welcoming support she is receiving from the local
community. Well done Beecroft and Cheltenham.
Graffiti in Beecroft and Cheltenham – follow up Following
our eNews released earlier this week a member of the BCCT Committee has
discussed the issue of graffiti in Beecroft / Cheltenham with the Ryde
Police Area Command (PAC). According to them there have been no
incidents of graffiti reported directly to the Police. Police officers
from the Ryde PAC have visited Beecroft / Cheltenham to view some of the
graffiti and will increase their presence in the area. They have
however requested that members of the community report graffiti
incidents to the following numbers:

For public areas e.g parks, railway stations, bus stops etc
NSW Graffiti Hotline - free call 1800 707 125 - operates from 9 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday excluding public holidays.
Ahimsa – 40th Anniversary – Sunday 17th November 2019 Residents are invited to attend the 40th
anniversary of the death of Marie Byles to be held her former property
Ahimsa at Cheltenham, owned by the National Trust. The Friends of Ahimsa
has organised a day of activities on Sunday 17th November
2019. The activities start about 10 am and continue through to 4pm. All
